Meet Brett R. Finkelmeier, DDS, MS

A proud alumni of Carmel High School, a former young athlete in Carmel Dad’s Club, and a big fan of Bub’s elk burgers, there was no doubt Dr. Finkelmeier wanted his orthodontic practice in his hometown of Carmel, Indiana. After 4 years playing basketball for the Greyhounds, Dr. Finkelmeier continued to Indiana University where he played varsity basketball for the Hoosiers. This hard work and dedication then translated into his work at IU Dental School, where he graduated with high honors and finished in the top of his class. Dr. Finkelmeier married his college sweetheart, Nicole, before taking off to pursue orthodontics at the University of Louisville. While in Louisville, he completed his orthodontic residency, tasted every BBQ and hot chicken restaurant in the city and welcomed his first baby, Beckham, into the world with his wife, Nicole. Although he enjoyed his time as a Cardinal, Dr. Finkelmeier was eager to give back to the town that gave him so much. Recently, the Finkelmeier family welcomed another boy, Christian Leo, into the family.

Learn More about Orthodontics

How will someone benefit from early evaluation?

An early Orthodontic evaluation is the key to help identify any potential problems which will greatly help to reduce the severity as well as the level of necessary treatment. This will also ensure that the entire development of the jaw and teeth are in line with the age of the patient. It may not be necessary to treat the patient at this time, however, its better safe than sorry!

What is age seven so critical?

Adult molars start to push through at around the age of seven, allowing the development of a healthy back bite enabling the orthodontist check for proper alignment, overbite, crowding, eruption sequence, gummy smiles, open bites or any other tooth problems.

What are benefits to interceptive treatment?

Orthodontics is not just for aesthetic purposes. It also helps to improve malocclusions—bad bites. This is when the jaw or teeth are misaligned and affects the ability to clean your teeth, chew food and can even affect your smile and your self esteem.

What happens if malocclusions are left untreated?

According to studies by the American Association of Orthodontists, untreated malocclusions can cause several problems. When left untreated, it makes it harder to adequately clean and floss the teeth. This may lead to gum disease and tooth decay. Protruding teeth are more likely to be chipped and untreated crossbites can influence future growth. Open bites are another issue, which may cause speech impediments due to tongue-thrusting. If you feel good about your smile, you gain self-confidence.
